Team Sophie, initiated by two local businessmen in 2009, was designed to help provide financing for British Paralympian Sophie Christiansen, who as an equestrian, has substantially higher costs than a track runner. At the time she had two borrowed horses to maintain and then transport to qualifying events on the run-up to the last Europeans before the 2012 Paralympic Games. This fund was used to purchase 2012 Paralympic gold-medal-winner Janeiro 6, or “Rio”.
Team Sophie aims to raise funds and obtain gifts in kind to support Sophie’s next Paralympic bid. The target is £12-15K per annum per horse. Should money, surplus to Sophie’s requirement, be raised, the surplus will be spent on work to inspire others with disabilities to ride or improve their riding.
